Iced Pre-Workout Matcha: Clean Energy Before Training
Forget the chemical pre-workouts and sugary energy drinks. This iced matcha gives you a clean, lasting energy boost, with no crash, no jitters. The L-theanine in matcha pairs with natural caffeine for maximum focus during your workout.
Frozen banana provides the natural carbs your muscles need, ginger boosts circulation, and lemon refreshes the whole drink. Works with Ceremonial for a more delicate profile, or Barista for a bolder flavor that holds up against the other ingredients.
Recipe card
Ingredients
- 1 tsp (2 g) Bian Matcha Ceremonial or Barista
- 20 ml Hot water at 70-80 °C (160-175 °F) (mini shaker)
- 60 ml Hot water at 70-80 °C (matcha bowl)
- ½ Frozen banana (natural sugar + potassium)
- 200 ml Unsweetened oat milk (or coconut water for electrolytes)
- 1 tsp Fresh grated ginger (or ¼ tsp powdered)
- ½ Fresh lemon juice
- 1 tsp Honey or maple syrup (optional)
- 1 handful Ice cubes
Prep ahead! Slice your banana the night before and freeze it. On training day, you assemble everything in 5 minutes flat. The frozen banana replaces the ice cubes and gives a creamier texture.
Recommended accessories
For this recipe, a blender is ideal. To dissolve the matcha quickly before blending everything:
🥤Instructions
- 1Dissolve the matchaAdd 2 g of matcha to your mini shaker with 20 ml of water at 70-80 °C, no need to sift, the shaker takes care of it. Shake 20 seconds. If you're using a matcha bowl, sift the matcha first, add 60 ml of water at 70-80 °C and whisk with your chasen.
- 2Let the matcha coolPour the dissolved matcha into your blender and let it cool for 2-3 minutes. You can also prepare it the night before and keep it in the fridge overnight.
- 3Add all the ingredientsTo the blender with the matcha, add the frozen banana, oat milk, grated ginger, lemon juice and honey if using.
- 4Blend and add iceBlend for 30 seconds at high speed. Add a handful of ice cubes and blend for another 15 seconds for a properly cold, slightly foamy texture.
- 5Drink 20-30 minutes before trainingPour into a tall glass or sport bottle. Ideally consume 20 to 30 minutes before your workout so the caffeine and L-theanine have time to kick in.
Perfect timing: the caffeine in matcha peaks about 30-45 minutes after ingestion. Prep your drink, do your warm-up, and you'll be at peak focus the moment you start.

Frequently asked questions
Why choose matcha over a classic pre-workout?
Commercial pre-workouts often contain massive doses of synthetic caffeine, artificial flavors and sweeteners. Matcha offers natural caffeine combined with L-theanine, this duo delivers steady energy and sharper focus, with no shakes or post-workout crash.
What's the difference between Ceremonial and Barista in this recipe?
Ceremonial gives a more delicate, floral profile that pairs well with the soft flavors of banana. Barista has a more robust flavor that holds up better against ginger and lemon, ideal if you want to taste the matcha even with a lot of ingredients.
How long before training should I drink this?
Ideally 20 to 30 minutes before. The caffeine in matcha is absorbed gradually thanks to L-theanine, and its effect peaks about 30-45 minutes after ingestion. Avoid drinking it right before intense effort so you don't have a heavy stomach.
Can I make it the night before?
Yes, partially. Dissolve the matcha ahead of time and keep it in the fridge in a sealed container. In the morning, simply add the banana, milk and ice to the blender. The full drink will keep for a few hours in the fridge but tastes best fresh.
Can I make this recipe without a blender?
A blender is ideal for the creamy texture, but if you don't have one: mash the banana with a fork, dissolve the matcha in the mini shaker, then mix everything in a tall glass with the ice. The texture will be less smooth, but the flavor will be there.
