The chasen is a bamboo whisk hand-cut from a single stalk. Its fine prongs create the silky foam that defines well-prepared matcha. It’s the essential tool for water-based tasting, in pure Japanese tradition.
How to use it
The W technique
- Sift 1 tsp of matcha into a bowl
- Add 60 ml of water at 70 °C
- Whisk in a W zigzag at the surface for 20 to 30 seconds
- A fine foam appears : it’s ready

How to maintain it
- Before first use, soak the chasen in warm water for 1 to 2 minutes to soften the prongs
- After each use, rinse with warm water, no soap
- Place it on its stand (sold separately or with the Kit) to keep its shape
- Air-dry completely before storing
Frequently asked questions
How long does a chasen last ?
Between 6 and 12 months depending on use. The prongs eventually wear or break : that’s the sign to replace it.
Why no soap ?
Bamboo absorbs odors and flavors. Soap leaves residue that affects the taste of matcha. Warm water is enough.
Dishwasher-safe ?
No. Heat and detergents damage the bamboo prongs.
Is the stand included ?
No, the chasen is sold alone. The stand is included in our Essentials Matcha Kit.
